Slippery Love in the Christmas Season
When I arrived at the café where my friends said they would be, they greeted me with hugs and laughter. We walked around the center of town and talked about all the couples we saw holding hands. We all agreed that couples are quite annoying to single women in the holiday season.
As we walked around the crowded streets, we spotted some couples kissing in public, others with arms around one another or holding hands or playfully chasing each other in the snow. My friends and I think these couples are strange because they should try to keep their feelings to themselves.
My friends and I were walking and joking around until fate decided to play a joke on my friend. She slipped on some ice and tripped over a man’s foot on the slippery street. The man dove down to catch my friend out of reaction to my friend’s fall, but ended up falling down with her. Their faces were on top of each other from the fall, so to observers, it looked like a romantic gesture.
My other friend and I were laughing at the sight because they looked so romantic together. We both started teasing her and she was quite embarrassed especially since we all expressed our feelings for public displays of affection. Her face was so red from both the cold and the situation.
The man helped my friend up and said he was sorry. It turned out that we knew him from school and he was a few years older than us. My friend thought that she had found romance and never joked about couples since that night. She has had a crush on this guy ever since that snowy Christmas night and she tried to talk to him at school after the holiday break.
Unfortunately, the situation might as well have been a dream because the man never remembered the night as my friend did. The romantic situation never bloomed to anything, but a friendship.
I will never forget this Christmas day because I spent it with my best friends. The night was filled with humor and laughter and the parade was also a highlight of the night.
Haha,
Romance can be slippery! And I definitely agree that "couples are quite annoying to single women in the holiday season." I thought this was a great essay Sally :) I really like how you describe your clothing so well in the beginning--it helps us visualize (or 'see') the story--this is more difficult to do without a video, but I could imagine the entire thing! You also use advanced vocabulary like "romantic gesture" very fluently. Another strength of this piece of writing is how well your personality and voice come through in the story: even though the essay is not mostly about you it shows us a lot about your attitude and how you see the world. This is excellent work--so now I know I can expect something equally wonderful for this year's contest, right? ;) I'm excited to work on it with you!
Thanks,
Lowrie
