What is a self-driving Car?
A self-driving car is a car that drives without a human driver. A human passenger doesn’t need to take control of the car at any time, nor is a human passenger needed to be in the car at all. A self-driving car can go anywhere a traditional car goes and do everything that an experienced human driver does.
There are 6 levels of driving automation ranging from Level 0 (fully manual) to Level 5 (fully autonomous)
The Pros and Cons of Self-Driving Cars
We will have self-driving cars in the very near future. There will be some exciting advantages as well as disadvantages.
Let’s take a look at some of the different pros and cons.
Pro:
Accidents on the road are generally due to some form of human error. Self-driving cars will have faster reaction times as well as the ability to communicate with other self-driving cars which could help them to avoid accidents and even reduce traffic jams.
Con:
Even with lower odds accidents can still happen due to technical malfunctions or other cars driven by humans on the road. If accidents do happen it is difficult to tell who is at fault.
Pro:
Self-driving cars have the potential to completely change our commutes. Since there’s no actual driving required you could use this time to work, watch TV shows, check social media or even sleep.
Con:
As with many other emerging technologies some jobs will be eliminated, for example: truck and taxi drivers. In this case, it would prove to be a difficult time for many.
Pro:
Parking will be less of an inconvenience. Whether you’re in a busy parking lot or looking for a spot downtown your car has the potential to drop you off and then find a parking spot on its own or maybe even just circle the block while you run a quick errand.
Con:
Self-driving cars are going to be pretty expensive at first. After their release, the prices may come down but they may still be more expensive than traditional cars. This may mean that car ownership decreases in the future with people opting to rent self-driving cars only when they need them.
