The axolotl is a kind of salamander. They are only located near Mexico City in North America in Lake Xochimilco. Axolotls vary in color from brown to pink to green. Female axolotls lay up to 1000 eggs at a time. Surprisingly, they can regrow their own body parts. This unique ability means they're regularly used for scientific research. The number of axolotls is decreasing due to pollution and invasive species.
