Common Model Verbs:

I should have gone to class, but didn’t.

I will take a test today.

I must do my homework.

Position of Modal Verbs

Possible verb phrase combinations that contain modal verbs in English:

  • modal verb + base form = will eat
  • modal verb + be + present participle = will be eating
  • modal verb + have + past participle = will have eaten
  • modal verb + be + past participle = will be eaten
  • modal verb + have + been + present participle = will have been eating
  • modal verb + have + been + past participle = will have been eaten
  • modal + be + being + past participle = will be being eaten
  • modal verb + have + been + being + past participle = will have been being eaten

Modal Phrases:

·         like modals, but are more than one word

ex.  be able to/be going to/have to

·         2  modals cannot go together, but a modal and modal phrase can go together:

examples:   I
will be able to see a movie tomorrow.

 

She was able to finish her degree by taking online courses.

She wasn't supposed to graduate until next year.
