Teacher Manual
1. "English Aloud Teachers Center" Group on Skype:
Before teaching your first lesson, please send a short message such as "Hi" inside of "English Aloud Teachers Center" Skype Chat. This is very important! If Kevin thinks you are not there he will call your cellphone. It is easy to avoid this by sending a quick message to let every teacher know you are there.
2. All teachers should download the teachers' schedule every day from the group chat, "English Aloud Teachers Center" on Skype and check for the most updated version before they begin teaching. Kevin will send the schedule again throughout the day if something changes. You should follow the newest updated version of the schedule and delete the older version.
3. Before a teacher signs off for the day, they should send Kevin a short message. For example "bye" or "I'm finished", then they should wait for one minute, or until Kevin sends a response. After that, they may sign off. Usually, Kevin responds immediately, but please wait just in case. This is so that Kevin has a chance to fill in teachers on any updates they may need to know before the following day of teaching.
4. At the time of the lesson, call the student right away, whether or not the student is online. In the case that the student appears offline, you should try to call anyway. It is important to always call the student on time, whether the student is online or offline. Otherwise, the teacher should give the student a make-up lesson.
If any of the following occur, send Kevin a message:
- Online but no ringtone
- Online but no answer (Online with ringtone but no answer.)
- Offline (Offline and no ringtone)
- Offline with ringtone but no answer
In the message identify the student's name and which situation occurred. For example: Julia Hong is offline.
Please make sure to send the message immediately after only one minute, do not wait until a few minutes later or it may be too late. Don't hesitate, just send a message right away. This way, Kevin can send the student or their parents a message on their phones as soon as possible.
5. If a student does not show up at all, let Kevin know. You can just tell him the student was absent or did not come. For example, "Jack did not come".
6. One lesson lasts 25 minutes.
If the student shows up late, compensate by using the five minutes break that you have between students. If the student is 5 minutes late, you can still give a complete 25 minutes lesson. If the student is 6 or more minutes late, give them the full five minutes extra, even though the lesson still may be shorter than 25 minutes. If the teacher doesn't have class after the lesson, they could continue to teach until the full lesson is complete. It is very important if the student is often absent.
For the last lesson of the day, if the student does not show up after 13 minutes, you can let Kevin know and sign off for the day.
7. Internet connection through Wifi is not recommended to teach in general. The ideal is to be directly connected to the Internet through a cable. You should not use a smartphone, of course. Wireless headsets are not allowed.
8. Please send messages to Kevin by E-MAIL, do not send skype messages to him when he is not online! He will not receive any messages sent on skype when either person is offline. He will get it only if you and Kevin are online at the same time. Again: he will not get the message, even if he comes online later. Please don't trust Skype messages, if the other person is not online.
