Q: The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The line graph illustrates the percent of persons 65 years old or older from 1940 to 2040 in Japan, Sweden and USA.
In general, the proportions of aged people in three countries are gradually increased for 100 years. According to the graph, the percentage of elderly started between 5 and 10 in 1940 and reaches about 25 in 2040. The figures in 2040 is 5 times higher than 1940.
The proportion of population aged 65 and over in Sweden is steadily rose with a fluctuation from 7% to 25%. On the other hand, it started at 5%, but slightly dipped to 3% between 1960 and 1980, then recovers to 10 percent in 2030 and then dramatically jumps by 27% for next 10 years in Japan. The percent of the aged people in USA goes up gently compare to other two countries.
The most aged society was USA with 9% elderly people and the lowest figure was 5% in Japan in 1940. However, the most graying country is Japan with 27% aged population and the country has the lowest proportion of aged people is USA with 23% elderly population.
