Hi John.

How's your weekend?

Writing Task 2

" Increasing the price of petrol is the best way to solve growing traffic and pollution problems. To what extent do you agree or disagree? What other measures do you think might be effective?"

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

Some people think that increasing the price of petrol is the best way to solve growing traffic and pollution problems. I agree that oil price control can be a good strategy to deal with the problems we face. However, this cannot be the best practice for several reasons.

To begin with, the conclusion is based on unwarranted assumption that the higher oil price increases, the less cars are used. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that this is the case. Some people may think that convenience comes first than costs. Others may not be able to find alternative transportation systems other than cars. In so many cases, oil price do not affect people’s behaviors.

Another reason is that those people failed to take into account other factors on traffic jam. Even if the frequency of using cars decreases, it is still probable that people, especially those who live in cities, suffer from traffic problems due to intensive population, narrow roads, or a number of public buses during rush hours.

Also, reduction in number of cars on the road do not necessarily means that air condition will be improved. There are many other factors that can affect air condition negatively such as plants and factories.

In conclusion, based on reasons I listed above, oil price increase cannot be the best way to deal with traffic and pollution problems. In order to solve these problems, the best thing to do is to figure out what the main causes are. Otherwise, we will not be able to approach the solution to those issues properly.
