Hello my name is Hwang YeBin, and this is my story based on the movie “The Battle of Yeonpyeong.”

It was June 2002, during the world cup soccer tournament. South Korea and Turkey were playing matches 3 and 4. Korea and Turkey were fighting to win. But at the same time guns were booming in the middle of the western sea, because of a fight between North Korea and South Korea. That war continues to this day because it is a fight in the seafront.

SOCCER MATCH (Normal Korean citizen)

It was the hottest day of the summer so far. I was watching a soccer game but my cousin, Momo, was out in the western sea fighting North Korea. I was trying to focus on the game, but I was also worried about Momo! The stadium was large and there were many fans watching the game. The stadium was full of yelling people eating chicken and other stadium foods. Most of the fans were Korean, because the stadium was in Seoul and it was the soccer world cup. The Turkish player stole the ball and ran to the Korean goal, he kicked the ball, he got a goal! I felt very sad…

FIGHTING IN THE SEAFRONT (Momo)

I was on a big South Korean army boat when the North started shooting at us. A soldier next to me was shot in the arm and leg. As the boat doctor as well as a soldier, I had to fix his bloody arm and leg. After an hour, there were many other hurt soldiers. I helped as many soldiers as I could. But when I was moving a body I was shot many times. I ran toward the inside of the boat where I would be safer.  A helicopter came down to rescue the hurt soldiers. I got on the helicopter and went to the hospital.

HOSPITAL (Normal Korean citizen)

Momo’s mom and I went to visit Momo in the hospital.  When we were there, Momo died. I learned a lesson I will not forget: it is hard and dangerous work to be a soldier, we should thank and respect the men and women who fought and died for us.

Thank you for listening! Goodbye.
