3. Google Translate (http://translate.google.com)
The accuracy of “Google Translate” (English vs. Korean) is about 50-100% for short sentences and texts. That is higher than one might think. This program is always improving and we should take advantage of this opportunity. We can use it to teach like Korean English teachers.
3.1 For teachers: An emergency method to help to teach beginners: Google Translate
If a beginner student didn’t prepare anything before class and the student didn’t understand the texts much, even though the teacher has tried to explain a lot in class.
0. The teacher should ask the student to explain the text. The student should try to explain in English as good as possible using body language and/or images. It is good for students to use a lot of body language in class. It is fun, adventurous and challenging. It makes class more joyful for students. The teacher should find out if the student understood.
Then the teacher should try to use Google Translate.
Google Translate is our last method. We don’t like it much, if there is an alternative. But Google Translate can save our class.
This technique should be used for low level textbooks only such as Super Easy Reading or Very Easy Reading. The most difficult books are School Subject Reading books.
3.2. For students: Google Translate is a good thing to prepare before class for all kinds of levels of students, especially when they read texts. Please introduce it to your students in class.
