2. A best teacher is someone who makes the student study not only in class, but also out of class. It is important to the students especially who attend our school three times or more a week. Please ask your students about their English learning, if they attend other language schools or how they study English. Our teachers should be interested in learning all about their English learning. Of course, you encourage your students to study English. Our teachers should try to play the role of a manager about their English learning.
3. No teachers’ Meeting next week.
4. October 31st is the Halloween themed Teacher's Party... Here are some things to keep in mind: Many English schools in Korea use Halloween to catch students’ interest, but in fact many students have no idea what the holiday is exactly. Koreans may be curious about Halloween, but they don't know a lot about it. Teach your students about Halloween during class. For example: What is it? What do you do to celebrate Halloween in the United States?
A little about Halloween:
Halloween is a holiday in the United States celebrated on October 31st. The word "Halloween" comes from the 16th century, and is a Scottish version of the term "all-Hallows-eve" (the night before the day of the Hallows). There are many old traditions for celebrating Halloween that stem from different cultures, but today in the United States the main ways to celebrate include dressing in costumes, having parties, and bringing children around to get candy from neighbors (trick-or-treating). During the day, many elementary schools have parties for all of the kids to celebrate Halloween. This often includes carving pumpkins into scary faces (jack-o-lanterns), doing crafts and games with "scary" themes, and parading around the school in costumes. Kids can dress up in any costume! Some popular ideas are witches, monsters (Frankenstein, Dracula, etc), vampires, skeletons or anything scary. However, many people dress up in costumes that are not scary at all, such as favorite movie and TV characters, popular singers, animals, or like any profession.
For the Teacher's Party: Some suggestions for activities at the party: -Tell "Ghost Stories" or any kind of scary stories. This is a good way for each student to have a little speaking time. Tell the students ahead of time to think of a scary story to tell. It might help to give them an example during class.
-Have the students tell about their costumes. What are they? How did they think of the idea? How did they make them? Who helped them?
-Make your regular English games (word games such as hangman for example) themed to Halloween. You can use Halloween words such as: scary, pumpkin, ghost, witch, etc.
-Do a "Fortune Teller Game". Have the students take turns being a fortune teller. The fortune teller will guess facts about the other students (example: "Lucy has 2 brothers, Jacob has a cat"). Whoever makes the most correct guesses wins the game. You can have the winner make the final guess by asking them a question such as "how many coins do I have in my hand?"
-Do contest winners: At the end of the party give out "awards" for "The Best Fortune Teller", "The Best Costume", "The Scariest Ghost Story", etc.
Terms:
Trick-or-treating- This is the practice of going with children from house to house in their costumes, with bags, baskets, or pillow cases to fill with candy. The children knock on the door, and when someone answers they yell "trick-or-treat!" Then the person at the door must give them each a piece of candy. For example: chocolates, caramels, or any type of candy.
Jack-o-lanterns- A pumpkin carved with a scary face, usually with a candle placed inside at night to make it appear to be glowing. Many kids love to make Jack-o-lanterns on Halloween.
