International phone call dialogue

Emmy: Hi Max, I'm so happy to be talking to you! I've missed you so much while I have been on vacation.

Max: Hi Emmy, thank you for calling! It's a wonderful surprise to hear your voice. I miss you too. I know you are in South Africa, but where are you now exactly?

Emmy: My family an I are still on safari at Kruger National Park. It is amazing here!

Max: Do you like it there?

Emmy: I love it. It's incredible to see so many animals living in their natural habitat. I have seen so many zebras they are not even exciting anymore! Haha

Max: Wow, what was the most amazing thing you have seen so far?

Emmy: Well, the most exciting thing I saw was the baby cheetah I wrote to you about. It looked like a kitten but it was the size of an adult house cat!

Max: I would love that too but I'm also interested in learning about people who live in South Africa. How about them?

Emmy: Well, South Africa is a very diverse country. There are around 30 ethnic tribes, as well as many people who work there from places all around the world.

Max: Interesting, I know that most of the world's diamonds come from South Africa. Did you visit a diamond mine?

Emmy: No, but I don't think that's allowed. Too many thieves! Haha

Max: I would guess that there would be a lot of thieves in South Africa because there are so many different kinds of people there. Have you seen them?

Emmy: Well, I have noticed many poor people and beggars in the streets. There is a huge gap between rich and poor in the country. I can understand how people might be desperate enough to steal.

Max: As far as I know South Africa is the richest country in Africa.

Emmy: But from what I have seen the wealth is in the hands of very few people. It seems that the majority of South Africans do not enjoy the fruit of their country's natural resources.

Max: I have heard many people from neighboring countries come to work in South Africa and return to their homes at night.

Emmy: Yes, I can see how that would be true. There are many more opportunities to make money in South Africa than in other African nations.

Max: Wow, it sounds like an exotic and fascinating place! I hope one day I can go there as well.
