Teacher Manual
There are many types of parents at our school:
1. The first type of parent (An example: Johanna's parents).
The first type of parent is one who prefers that the student learn mostly using a textbook.
In this type of case if the student is low-level, we need the parents' help outside of class ("Reading Starter 3," 2.40 or lower). Low-level students don't understand English a lot and our teachers don't speak Korean fluently. In this situation, we need help from their parents. So their parents should play the role of the tutor outside of class. The success of the class is often depending on the parents' help. The parents often play a more important role in our classes than our teacher at EnglishAloud. We should accept that fact. So our teacher should guide not only the student but also their parents.
Tips for a successful relationship with parents:
-Use the textbook for a minimum of 10 minutes of the class. (The textbook is an easy way for parents to help students outside of class as well)
-Type information about the class in the Skype messages. (Write about student homework assignments, vocabulary for the students to study, and other important information from class).
Even if it seems like the student is having fun in class, they might leave the school anyway. This usually means it was the parents' decision. This is why it is important to have the parents' support.
If the parents know that they cannot control the student, they have to decide on one of two solutions: The first one is that they leave our school. The second is they change their mind and become the second type of parents.
2. The second type of parents (Example: Jayden's parents)
The second type of parent is one who starts out feeling more serious about the student learning from a textbook, but then changes their minds when they see that the student concentrates better when they are having fun. This type of parent often decides that it is ok for the student to do games and other activities and not only the textbook. In extreme cases, they may even decide to give up the textbook if the student doesn't concentrate or refuses to do work from the book.
3. The third type of parent (Example: Geeyoon's parents).
The third type of parent is the one who wants their child to principally have fun during the class.
They want the student to enjoy learning English and associate it with fun experiences like conversation, activities, and games. These parents are satisfied with the teacher choosing the format of the class and won't complain as long as the student is enjoying the class.
* During the interview, try to figure out what type of parent you are dealing with. If you are not sure, it is good to start out assuming that it is the first type of parent.
As you teach the student you might find out that the parent is the third type of parent, and you can adjust your teaching style.
In many cases, the parent will call Kevin and let him know if they want a change in the class. Example: "Please tell the teacher not to spend too much time on small talk" or "The student only wants to have fun in class"
